Emmanuel School Adoption Program

The children in Arrawaddy who are receiving Emmanuel Scholarship

Background

During Cyclone Nargis in May 2008, over 1000 schools were destroyed in the Irrawaddy Delta region, especially in the township of Bogaley and Laputta. After the cyclone, many of these schools need to be reconstructed. As of November 2008, the government has only received commitments to rebuild 10% of these schools; the educational system itself receives little funding as well.

I Love Myanmar is currently engaged in rebuilding primary and high school in Bogale and Laputta townships. During recent trips to Cyclone Nargis affected villages and prospective school rebuilding sites I Love Myanmar noted several things:

Significant number of schools were destroyed and need to be rebuilt

Most villages only have primary schools , a few have middle schools and high schools are scarce

Students from villages sent to high schools have difficulty paying tuition after Cyclone Nargis

Higher percentage of village children are in school due to free schooling this year

       Most teachers receive a meager salary (Primary teachers~ $ 28.5 USD/ Month)

I Love Myanmar is exploring the possibilities of “adopting” schools which ILM will be rebuilding.

Under the Emmanuel School Adoption Program, ILM will take responsibility of teacher salaries and the portion of student tuition that is paid towards the education department. Under the Emmanuel School Adoption Program, free schooling will then be offered to all children in the village.

Benefits

-With the Emmanuel School Adoption Program in place, students in the villages will be able to study for free, and more children will be able to study.

-Teachers will also be provided a more reasonable salary.

ILM will also considering hiring more teachers if necessary and provide all needed teaching material.

Additional Information

A four room 30 x 80 ft primary school building constructed out of reinforced concrete will vary depending on location as a sizeable portion of cost is in the transportation of material to site.
